I started holding mutual aid craft raffles in January. Devastated by the impact of Hurricane Helene on my own life and the lives of so many others and feeling powerless to help my community of several years, I rallied some of my friends to raffle off handcrafted items to raise money for a mutual aid group in North Carolina that was instrumental in providing to support to WNC in the wake of the storm. The raffle was a hit, reaching thousands across the internet.
In the spring, someone living in Gaza reached out to me, asking for support. After talking about how I could help in such a devastating and violent situation, I once again put out the call for handmade donations for a craft raffle (now called a “craffle” thanks to the genius of one of the participants). Strangers showed up for this one, with more than 15 people joining in to donate goods and services to raise money for my internet friend and her family.
Now, it’s time for another raffle, and I need your help. My internet friend Aya and her family live in Gaza and need money for food, vitamins, and other essentials. If you’re reading this, consider donating something you’ve made to this cause. Whether you make food, art, clothing, or literally anything else, I’d love to have as many items to raffle off for Aya as I can find.
Interested? Just respond to this email, or DM me @lookwhathanmade on Instagram. If you don’t have anything handcrafted to contribute, have no fear: I’ll be back in a few weeks asking for your $$$.
